Claude Debussy's "Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien" originally emerged in 1911 as a mystery play created in collaboration with Gabriele d'Annunzio. The symphonic fragments present Debussy's late musical language in all its impressionistic splendor, characterized by subtle tone colors, floating harmonies, and an almost sacred atmosphere. The music combines French refinement with mystical spirituality and shows Debussy at the height of his compositional maturity.
The four movements of the orchestral suite reveal Debussy's mastery of orchestral treatment. Delicate harp sounds, shimmering strings, and mysterious woodwind colors create that otherworldly sonic realm characteristic of the composer of the "Nocturnes" and "La Mer." The lavish use of three harps and celesta in particular lends the score an almost ethereal brilliance.
As one of Debussy's last major works, "Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien" stands at the end of the French Impressionist era. The music is said to have been quite controversial at the time of its creation – not only because of its modern musical language, but also due to the contentious collaboration with d'Annunzio. Today the work is regarded as a fascinating testament to Debussy's late creative period.
The premiere was conducted by the composer André Léon Caplet.
