Debussy's Rhapsody for Saxophone and Orchestra was composed in 1911 as one of the few concert works for this then still young instrument. The work displays all the characteristic features of Debussy's mature musical language: impressionistic coloring, floating harmonies, and a melodic line that unfolds freely from traditional formal constraints. The Rhapsody exploits the expressive potential of the saxophone with its warm, sensual timbres and its capacity for seamless dynamic transitions.
In typically French fashion, Debussy combines elegance with subtle emotionality. The orchestra functions less as accompaniment than as a sonic partner, painting an impressionistic canvas of light and shadow with the solo instrument. The harmonic language moves in those iridescent spheres between major and minor that characterize Debussy's music from this creative period.
The orchestral version is by Jean Roger-Ducasse, who sensitively arranged Debussy's composition, originally conceived for saxophone and piano, for full orchestra. The work is considered an important contribution to the still slender repertoire for saxophone and orchestra and demonstrates impressively how Debussy was able to integrate even unusual instrumental combinations into his impressionistic sound world.
The premiere was conducted by the composer André Léon Caplet.
