Claude Debussy's "Children's Corner" was composed in 1906 as a piano cycle for his young daughter Claude-Emma and reveals an unusually playful side of the composer. The six miniatures combine Debussy's characteristic impressionist musical language with childlike lightness and ironic wit. André Caplet, Debussy's close friend and confidant, created a sensitive orchestral version in 1911 that skillfully transfers the delicate color nuances of the original to the ensemble.
The orchestration respects Debussy's impressionist aesthetic and relies on subtle sound mixtures rather than orchestral effects. Caplet uses the instruments in a chamber music style and creates transparent textures that correspond to the intimate character of the piano original. Particularly charming is the play with various national idioms – from the German étude tradition to American ragtime.
The work is considered a characteristic example of French music of the early modern period, which deliberately distanced itself from German late Romanticism. Debussy's playful treatment of stylistic quotations and his preference for the fragmentary are shown here in concentrated form. The orchestral version is said to have been particularly well received in France.
The premiere was conducted by the composer André Léon Caplet.
