Debussy's "Iberia" was composed between 1905-1908 as the second movement of his three-part orchestral cycle "Images" and represents a pinnacle of his impressionist musical language. The work demonstrates Debussy's masterful ability to evoke atmospheric images through purely musical means without resorting to crude program music. The sophisticated orchestration with its preference for floating sound planes, pointillistic color effects and rhythmic ambiguities corresponds entirely to the aesthetic stance of French Impressionism.
Although Debussy knew Spain only superficially, he succeeds in creating an authentic evocation of Iberian sound worlds. He uses folkloric elements not as quotation, but transforms them through his harmonic language with its whole-tone scales, pentatonics and floating chord structures. The work stands as exemplary of Debussy's departure from the German symphonic tradition and his turn toward a specifically French modernism.
"Iberia" is considered one of Debussy's most orchestrally demanding works and requires the highest sonic sensitivity from performers. The complex score with its fragmented texture and filigree instrumental details is said to present special challenges even to experienced conductors.
The premiere was conducted by the composer Gabriel Pierné.
