Claude Debussy's "Jeux" was composed in 1913 as a commission from the legendary Ballets Russes and marks a pinnacle of his late creative period. The work shows Debussy at the height of his impressionistic musical language, while simultaneously looking ahead to new musical territories of early modernism. The score is distinguished by exceptionally refined orchestration, dominated by floating harmonies and shimmering tone colors.
The music largely abandons traditional thematic development in favor of a mosaic-like structure of constantly transforming sound images. Debussy employs the large orchestra with subtle restraint – harps and celesta lend the score a glittering brilliance, while the winds create kaleidoscopic shifts of color through ever-changing combinations. This innovative treatment of the orchestral apparatus already points beyond impressionism toward the coming modernism.
"Jeux" is considered one of the most progressive works of its time and is said to have exerted considerable influence on the subsequent generation of composers. The music embodies the spirit of the Belle Époque in its elegance and sophistication, while simultaneously leaving behind the aesthetic certainties of the 19th century.
