Albert Roussel's Concerto for Small Orchestra Op. 34 was composed in 1927 during a period of artistic maturity for the French composer. The work displays Roussel's characteristic fusion of impressionist tonal colors with an increasingly neoclassical formal language that defines his later compositions. The chamber music scoring enables transparent, nuanced instrumentation in which every voice becomes clearly audible.
Roussel, who is considered one of the most significant French symphonists of the 20th century, develops in this concerto a distinctive musical language positioned between the poles of French Impressionism and neue Sachlichkeit. His harmonic progressions combine tonal foundations with modern dissonances without neglecting the melodic line. The orchestration demonstrates Roussel's mastery in handling smaller ensembles.
The work stands as exemplary of French music of the 1920s, which sought new directions after the First World War. Roussel's compositional experience as a former naval officer is said to be reflected in the precise, disciplined structure of his scores, while his travels to the Orient had influenced earlier works.
