Albert Roussel's second orchestral suite from his ballet "Bacchus et Ariane" was composed in 1930 as the pinnacle of his mature period. The French composer developed his characteristic synthesis of impressionistic tone colors and a powerful, often archaic-seeming rhythmic language to perfection here. The music combines Mediterranean sensuality with Roussel's typical harmonic boldness and orchestral brilliance.
The suite reveals Roussel as one of the most individual representatives of French modernism between the world wars. His musical language moves between late-Romantic opulence and impressionistic refinement, without losing sight of classical form. Particularly in the dance scenes, the composer unfolds an intoxicating rhythmic energy that bears witness to his engagement with non-European musical traditions.
This large-scale orchestral work is considered one of the most successful ballet scores of French modernism. Roussel uses the mythological story of Bacchus and Ariadne for music of Dionysian power and poetic refinement, impressively documenting his position between Debussy and the younger neoclassicists.
