Ravel's Piano Concerto in G major was composed in 1931 as one of the final major works by the French master and is regarded as the pinnacle of his concerto output. The composition brilliantly unites the impressionist musical language of French modernism with jazz-inflected syncopated rhythms and neoclassical elements. Ravel created here a work of crystalline clarity and refined orchestration that bears his unmistakable signature.

The composer developed a musical language that alternates between chamber music intimacy and orchestral brilliance. Characteristic of Ravel's late creative period are the precisely placed coloristic touches of the orchestral instruments and the elegant fusion of French finesse with influences from American jazz. The piano is not treated as a dominating soloist, but rather as an equal partner within the orchestral fabric.

As a representative of French modernism, Ravel stood between epochs and with this concerto created a work that both respects the romantic concerto tradition and breaks new sonic ground. The composition is said to be among his most personal statements and reflects his mastery in combining technical perfection with poetic expressiveness.

„I have written a concerto for piano... In a certain sense this work is exceptional - I mean that it is written in such a way that it is not written 'for' the piano. I believe that a concerto can and should be written that is cheerful and brilliant without necessarily being superficial.“
— Interview mit Ravel, zitiert in M.D. Calvocoressi: 'Musicians Gallery', 1933
„Ravel sought to write a work in the spirit of Mozart, drawing inspiration from the concertos of Mozart and Saint-Saëns. The concerto is not meant to stage battles between orchestra and soloist, but to unite them.“
— Roland-Manuel: 'Maurice Ravel et son œuvre', 1938
