Ravel's "Ma mère l'Oye" was originally composed as a four-hand piano suite and was later arranged for full orchestra. The work is based on classic French fairy tales by Charles Perrault and Madame d'Aulnoy and demonstrates Ravel's masterful ability to create an enchanting sound world through subtle harmonic means and sophisticated orchestration techniques. The five movements are characterized by exceptional clarity and transparency in their orchestral writing.
Standing in the tradition of French Impressionism, Ravel here combines his characteristic precision with fairy-tale poetry. The orchestration is marked by extraordinary delicacy – every color of the orchestral palette is employed with the utmost care to evoke the respective fairy-tale moods. Particularly noteworthy is Ravel's use of exotic scales and his typical modal harmony.
"Ma mère l'Oye" is considered one of the most successful examples of Ravel's art of orchestration and his ability to portray complex emotional worlds in seemingly simplest form. The work stands as exemplary of early 20th-century French music, which is distinguished by elegance, refinement, and a distinctive sonic identity.
