Gustav Holst's "A Somerset Rhapsody" op. 21 was composed in 1906 as part of the English folk revival that inspired British composers around the turn of the century to systematically collect and artistically transform traditional folk melodies. The work belongs to Holst's early creative period, during which he engaged intensively with English folk music and began developing his distinctive personal style.
The rhapsody transforms authentic folk melodies from the county of Somerset into an atmospherically rich orchestral work. Holst's instrumentation already displays the colorfulness and sonic sophistication that would later reach full flowering in "The Planets." The warm wind colors and nuanced treatment of the strings particularly give the work its characteristically English pastoral quality.
The piece is regarded as an important building block in the development of an independent English orchestral music alongside works by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Frederick Delius. Holst's sensitive treatment of the folk song material avoids both superficial harmonization and excessive symphonic expansion, preserving the original character of the rural melodies in artful orchestral garb.
