Maurice Ravel's first orchestral suite from his ballet "Daphnis et Chloé" ranks among the pinnacles of French Impressionism. The work was commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes and demonstrates Ravel's masterful art of orchestration in perfect form. The suite combines three characteristic movements: an atmospheric nocturne, a connecting interlude, and the powerful warriors' dance.
Ravel's musical language achieves a sensual refinement here that is typical of French music of the early 20th century. With subtle harmonies, iridescent orchestral colors, and instrumentation of exceptional delicacy, the composer creates sonic tableaux of great evocative power. The score requires a large orchestra with extensive percussion and two harps, giving Ravel access to a broad spectrum of sonic possibilities.
The work is considered an example of Ravel's ability to translate ancient themes into a modern, specifically French musical idiom. The music combines impressionistic tone painting with the tradition of French ballet music and is said to have been among the composer's favorite pieces.
The premiere was conducted by the composer Gabriel Pierné.
