The second orchestral suite from Ravel's ballet "Daphnis et Chloé" is considered the pinnacle of French Impressionism in orchestral music. With its refined tone painting and iridescent orchestral colors, it embodies that distinctly French style which clearly stands apart from German late Romantic orchestration. Here Ravel unfolds his mastery of instrumentation with an orchestral apparatus ranging from chamber music transparency to massive crescendos.
The three movements – "Lever de jour," "Pantomime," and "Danse générale" – demonstrate Ravel's characteristic fusion of ancient themes with modern harmony. The finale in particular, with its intoxicating rhythm and ecstatic climaxes, is said to rank among the most effective orchestral pieces of the era. The composer employs every register of his orchestral palette, from delicate solo passages to monumental tuttis.
As a representative of French modernism, Ravel positions this work between Impressionism and Neoclassicism. The score reveals his fascination with complex rhythmic structures and his incomparable command of orchestral sound, which makes him, alongside Debussy, the most significant French composer of his generation.
