Danse générale

Maurice Ravel's ballet music “Daphnis et Chloé” was commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes and is considered one of the most significant orchestral works of French Impressionism. The Second Suite, which Ravel distilled from the complete work in 1913, encompasses the ballet's three concluding scenes and can be performed as a self-contained concert piece.

In terms of sound, the work stands as a prime example of Ravel's masterly art of orchestration: richly coloured woodwind combinations, two harps, celesta, and a generously scored percussion section conjure a shimmering, almost ethereal sound world that oscillates between antique idyll and sensuous vitality. The score shows Ravel at the height of his late Romantic-Impressionist style — harmonically refined, rhythmically precise, and of extraordinary orchestral transparency.

Within the context of early twentieth-century French music, “Daphnis et Chloé” stands in a lineage with Debussy's sensuous sound aesthetic, yet surpasses it in orchestral brilliance and structural rigour. To this day, the work remains a benchmark both for the conducting repertoire and for the sonic culture of great symphony orchestras.

„My aim in Daphnis et Chloé was to compose a large musical fresco, less with a view to faithful historical authenticity than to capturing antiquity as the French of the late 18th century imagined it.“
— Maurice Ravel, Interview mit M. D. Calvocoressi, The Musical Times, 1913; dokumentiert und zitiert in Arbie Orenstein (Hrsg.), „A Ravel Reader: Correspondence, Articles, Interviews", Columbia University Press, 1990, S. 396.
„"Daphnis et Chloé" represents to me a work of sweeping musical scope, built on a rigorous tonal plan that governs a carefully crafted orchestral palette and a sense of rhythm distilled from polytonal meter.“
— Maurice Ravel, autobiographische Skizze (1928), zitiert in Arbie Orenstein (Hrsg.), „A Ravel Reader: Correspondence, Articles, Interviews", Columbia University Press, 1990, S. 31.

The Suite No. 2 from Daphnis et Chloé (M.57a) draws on the music from the third act of the ballet of the same name and was arranged by Ravel in 1913 as a self-contained concert piece. The ballet itself had its world premiere on June 8, 1912, at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, conducted by Pierre Monteux with the Ballets Russes. The Suite No. 2 received its first performance on April 8, 1913, also in Paris and again under Monteux. Today it is a staple of the symphonic repertoire, culminating in the famous Bacchanale, one of the most virtuosic orchestral finales in all of French music. The working relationship between Ravel and Sergei Diaghilev during the creation of the ballet was marked by considerable tension: Ravel insisted on keeping the obligatory chorus, which Diaghilev sought to cut for reasons of cost.
