Debussy's "La Boîte à joujoux" was composed in 1913 as a piano work and belongs to the late compositions of the French Impressionist. The children's ballet reveals Debussy's playful, fairy-tale side, while still preserving his characteristic harmonic sophistication and innovative sound. André Caplet, a close friend and student of Debussy's, orchestrated the work after his death with remarkable sensitivity to the impressionistic musical language.
The music combines Debussy's typical harmonic language with a deliberately naive, childlike mode of expression. Pentatonic passages, floating chord progressions and the characteristic dissolution of traditional tonality create a dream world that is both sophisticated and immediately accessible. Caplet's orchestration skillfully employs the orchestra's tonal colors to bring the various toy figures to life.
"La Boîte à joujoux" stands as an exemplar of early modern French music, which sought to distinguish itself from German late Romanticism. Debussy's work is said to have been originally conceived for his daughter Claude-Emma and shows the composer in his final creative years searching for new forms of expression beyond grand symphonic gestures.
The premiere was conducted by the composer André Léon Caplet.
