Maurice Ravel's Rapsodie Espagnole from 1907 exemplifies the French fascination with Spanish musical worlds around the turn of the century. The four-movement work combines sophisticated impressionist orchestral technique with the rhythmic incisiveness and harmonic edge of Spanish folk music. Ravel, himself of Basque origin, draws from authentic Iberian sources without lapsing into folkloristic imitation.
The composition demonstrates Ravel's mastery of orchestration in perfect form. With subtle sound mixtures, differentiated percussion effects, and a scoring that includes even the rare sarrusophone, he creates a richly colored sonic panorama between nocturnal atmosphere and festive dance. The harmonic language moves between late Romantic chromaticism and sound layerings that already appear modern.
The Rapsodie is considered groundbreaking for Ravel's later orchestral works and is said to have made a great impression at its premiere. The work stands in the tradition of French orientalist reception, but already shows that stylistic independence which distinguishes Ravel from the impressionism of his contemporaries. Particularly the rhythmic complexity and the precise characterization of the four movements point ahead to the composer's mature orchestral style.
