Camille Saint-Saëns completed his Third Violin Concerto in B minor, Op. 61, in 1880 – a work that represents the pinnacle of his engagement with the genre. It was written in the context of French music following the Franco-Prussian War, a period during which composers such as Saint-Saëns were consciously working towards a distinctly French national music, one not dominated by German Romanticism.

The concerto's musical language combines classical structural rigour with a Romantic expressiveness. The solo part is marked by brilliant virtuosity and lyrical warmth, while the orchestra – scored for woodwind, brass, strings, and timpani – functions as an equal partner. The dark character of the B minor key lends the work a serious, at times passionate atmosphere, which is repeatedly brightened by moments of cantabile lyricism.

The concerto is considered the most mature and most personal of Saint-Saëns's three violin concertos and is said to have enjoyed great renown during the composer's own lifetime. Stylistically, it stands between the elegance of the French tradition and the symphonic weight of German Romanticism – a balance that Saint-Saëns managed to maintain with consummate skill.

Violin Concerto No. 3 in B minor, Op. 61, received its premiere on January 2, 1880, at the Concerts Colonne in Paris. The soloist was Pablo de Sarasate, to whom Saint-Saëns had dedicated the work. Sarasate was a close friend of the composer and had already given the premieres of several other works by Saint-Saëns. The concerto is widely regarded as the most significant and most mature of Saint-Saëns's three violin concertos, and to this day it is the only one to have maintained a place in the standard repertoire.
