The Capriccio Italien was composed in 1880 during Tchaikovsky's stay in Rome and reflects his fascination with Italian folk music. The work shows the composer at his most colorful: with brilliant orchestration and captivating melodies, he created one of the most popular orchestral compositions of the Romantic era. The vivid musical language combines Russian orchestral tradition with Italian temperament.

Tchaikovsky transforms authentic Italian melodies into a virtuosic orchestral piece that demonstrates his mastery of instrumentation. The brass section particularly shines, while the strings shape both lyrical and rhythmically striking passages. The work is considered a characteristic example of Tchaikovsky's ability to integrate folkloric elements into the symphonic language of late Romanticism.

The Capriccio stands as an exemplar of 19th-century national Romanticism, in which composers drew upon foreign folk music traditions and transformed them artistically. With its radiant A major character and spectacular orchestration, it became an audience favorite that presents Italian joie de vivre in Russian-Romantic garb.

„I'm writing a capriccio based on Italian folk melodies. It will be a brilliant orchestral piece, not very profound, but striking.“
— Brief an Nadeschda von Meck, Januar 1880
„The Capriccio Italiano made an extraordinary impression. The orchestration is masterful, the melodies are enchanting, and the entire character of the work breathes southern warmth.“
