The Danse bacchanale from Camille Saint-Saëns' opera Samson et Dalila (op. 47) ranks among the most colourful orchestral pieces of the French late Romantic era. The opera was composed between 1875 and 1877 and combines Saint-Saëns' mastery of orchestration with a pronounced taste for exotic timbres – a characteristic that left a lasting mark on French music of that period.
The Bacchanale, conceived in the third act as an orgiastic festive dance of the Philistines, unfolds a sensuously charged musical language full of rhythmic energy and Oriental colouring. Saint-Saëns deploys the harp, percussion, and the entire woodwind section to striking effect, conjuring an atmosphere of ecstatic abandon. The work stands as a prime example of the French Orientalism of the second half of the nineteenth century – a movement that captivated composers such as Bizet and, later, Debussy.
As a concert piece, the Danse bacchanale continues to be performed frequently around the world and is considered one of Saint-Saëns' most popular orchestral works. The combination of memorable melody, brilliant instrumentation, and dramatic cumulative power makes it a highly effective programme item that explores the full potential of a large orchestra.
