Claude Debussy composed the Danse sacrée et danse profane in 1904 as a commissioned work for the harpist and pedagogue Gustave Lyon of the Érard firm, who had developed a chromatic harp and was looking for a showpiece for the instrument. The work thus emerged in the context of a lively debate about the future of harp construction in the early twentieth century.
In terms of sound, the piece stands as a significant document of French Impressionism: Debussy draws on the harp's characteristic colours — its shimmer, its transparency, its capacity for seamless transition — and sets them within a restrained string framework that supports the solo voice without overshadowing it. The music breathes that atmosphere of suspension and otherworldliness so typical of Debussy, in which clear contours are deliberately dissolved.
The work belongs to the broader context of French modernism around the turn of the century, which — unlike German late Romanticism — focused not on dramatic intensification but on timbre, nuance, and sensory immediacy. Within Debussy's output, it sits naturally alongside works such as the String Quartet and the Nocturnes, in which he consistently unfolded his unmistakable, impressionistic musical language.
