The "Rapsodie espagnole" was composed in 1907 and was Maurice Ravel's first major orchestral work conceived directly for orchestra – not as a piano piece that was subsequently orchestrated. Although not Spanish himself, Ravel had deep ties to Iberian culture through his Basque mother and the proximity of his hometown of Ciboure to the Spanish border. This personal affinity is reflected in every bar of the work.
The four-movement composition is divided into "Prélude à la nuit," "Malagueña," "Habanera," and "Feria." From the very first movement, an ostinato four-note motif establishes a dreamlike, nocturnal atmosphere that defines the character of the entire work. The "Habanera" is based on a piano piece that Ravel had already composed in 1895. The work closes with the vivid "Feria," an exhilarating celebration brimming with rhythmic energy and brilliant orchestration.
The "Rapsodie espagnole" offers a compelling demonstration of Ravel's masterful command of the orchestral apparatus: through finely chiselled timbres, sophisticated instrumentation, and an unerring instinct for rhythm and melody, he created a work that unites Spanish colour with French Impressionism in an inimitable way.
