Claude Debussy composed “La mer” between 1903 and 1905, and the work is now regarded as one of the most significant orchestral compositions of the early twentieth century. In three symphonic sketches — “De l'aube à midi sur la mer”, “Jeux de vagues”, and “Dialogue du vent et de la mer” — Debussy creates a fascinating sonic portrait of the sea that reaches far beyond mere nature description.
Debussy was less interested in realistic depiction than in the fleeting impressions the sea makes upon the observer: light, movement, mood, and atmospheric change. Through masterly orchestration, subtle timbres, and a deliberately loosened harmonic language, he forged a new way of symphonic thinking that productively blurs the boundary between programme music and absolute music.
Although “La mer” met with a divided response at its Paris premiere in 1905, it quickly established itself as a key work of musical Impressionism and exerted a lasting influence on orchestral composition throughout the twentieth century. Today it is an indispensable part of the symphonic repertoire.
