Dame Ethel Smyth ranks among the most significant British composers of the late Romantic period and was one of the first women to achieve international recognition as an opera composer. Her opera "The Wreckers" was composed between 1904 and 1906 and is considered her principal work for the stage. The dramatic overture introduces the dark world of Cornish coastal inhabitants who cause shipwrecks in order to plunder the wreckage.
Smyth's musical language combines late Romantic harmony with a powerful, sometimes harsh orchestral sound that is clearly influenced by German models such as Wagner and Brahms. The composer studied at the Leipzig Conservatory and maintained close contacts with the German music scene. Her orchestral treatment displays remarkable richness of color and dramatic intensity that transcends the conventional British musical traditions of her time.
The overture is intended to anticipate all the essential dramatic elements of the opera and to impress through its atmospheric density. Smyth's compositional output stands as an example of the awakening of an independent British operatic culture at the beginning of the 20th century, even though her music stylistically remains firmly rooted in continental European late Romanticism.
