Claude Debussy's “Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune” (CD 87) was composed between 1891 and 1894 and is regarded as one of the key works of French musical modernism. Inspired by Stéphane Mallarmé's symbolist poem, Debussy created a sound world of dreamlike weightlessness and sensuous colour that deliberately breaks with the conventions of late-Romantic orchestral language.
The score is distinguished by suspended harmonies, fluid transitions, and a subtle instrumentation — including two harps, woodwinds of exceptional translucency, and strings that frequently recede to a whispered background. The famous opening line in the flute is said to have immediately identified the piece as something qualitatively new. Here Debussy departs from functional tonality and thematic development in favour of timbre, mood, and the fleeting moment — principles that were to lay the foundations of musical Impressionism.
The work stands at the beginning of Debussy's mature orchestral output and anticipates much of what he would develop further in later works such as “La Mer” and the “Images”. In the context of French orchestral music around 1900, it marks a profound turning point: away from the German legacy of Wagner and Brahms, and towards an independent, sensuously resonant aesthetic.
