Debussy's "La Mer" is considered a masterpiece of musical Impressionism and marks a turning point in orchestral music of the early modern era. With revolutionary tonal colors and a completely new treatment of the orchestral apparatus, the composer created a work that blurs the boundaries between programmatic and absolute music. The three symphonic sketches eschew narrative development in favor of a flowing, atmospheric musical language that captures the sea in its various moods.
The innovative orchestration employs subtle color blending and floating harmonies that are characteristic of Debussy's mature style. Pentatonic scales, whole-tone scales, and floating chord structures create that impressionistic sound world that makes the work one of the most influential orchestral pieces of the modern era. The sophisticated treatment of the winds and the virtuosic play with orchestral textures show Debussy at the height of his powers.
"La Mer" stands as an exemplar of French music around 1900, which consciously sought to distinguish itself from the German late-Romantic tradition. The work is said to have initially caused confusion at its 1905 premiere, but quickly established itself as a milestone of orchestral art and left a lasting influence on subsequent generations of composers.
