Vincent d'Indy's Symphonie sur un Chant Montagnard ranks among the most distinctive works of French late Romanticism. In this work, the composer combines the symphonic tradition with the characteristic French sound culture of his time, creating an unmistakable synthesis of folk melody and sophisticated orchestral treatment. The work exemplifies d'Indy's endeavor to integrate national elements into large symphonic forms.

The special quality lies in the equal treatment of solo piano and orchestra, causing the work to oscillate between piano concerto and symphony. D'Indy develops a dense motivic network from the mountain folk song of the title that permeates both sound bodies. His orchestration displays the characteristic French elegance and transparency without sacrificing romantic expressive power.

As a student of César Franck, d'Indy stands in the tradition of the French national school, which consciously sought to distinguish itself from German Romanticism. The symphony is considered a prime example of the French variant of cyclic form, in which motivic connections between movements create an organic unity. The work is said to have achieved great success at its premiere and established d'Indy as a significant symphonist of his generation.
