Debussy's Première Rhapsodie was composed in 1909 initially as an examination piece for clarinet and piano at the Paris Conservatoire and was orchestrated by the composer two years later. The work exemplifies Debussy's impressionistic musical language with its flowing harmonies, subtle tone colors, and departure from the German late Romantic tradition.
The Rhapsodie displays the clarinet in all its register and tonal possibilities, combining virtuosic passages with lyrical cantilenas. Debussy employs the characteristic devices of his mature creative period: floating chords, pentatonic turns, and an orchestration that bathes every sound in delicate, shimmering light. French elegance and a sense for sonic nuance stand at the center.
As one of the most significant concert works for clarinet, the Première Rhapsodie belongs to Debussy's later instrumental works, which show his turn toward a more concentrated, classicist formal structure. The work is considered a milestone of the French clarinet repertoire and combines virtuosic demands with the poetic expressive power of French Impressionism.
The premiere was conducted by the composer André Léon Caplet.
