Richard Strauss completed “Don Juan” in 1888 at the age of just twenty-four, producing one of the boldest and most virtuosic orchestral works of the late Romantic era. The piece is based on the unfinished dramatic fragment by Nikolaus Lenau and portrays a restless idealist who repeatedly fails in his pursuit of the perfect woman and the perfect pleasure — until he finally meets death in a mood of resignation.
The tone poem unfolds its richness in a single, freely structured movement full of dramatic contrasts: fiery hunting themes, lyrically rapturous love songs, and a shattering final catastrophe alternate throughout. Strauss demonstrates here his masterly command of the large orchestral apparatus and his unerring instinct for theatrical effect.
This edition is based on the New Critical Performance Edition (NCPE), edited by Clinton F. Nieweg and Nancy M. Bradburd. It provides a carefully revised musical text grounded in thorough source study, offering conductors and orchestras a reliable, practically prepared foundation for performing this canonical masterwork of the symphonic repertoire.
The composer conducted the premiere himself.
