César Franck's only completed symphony in D minor was composed between 1886-1888 and is considered the pinnacle of his orchestral output. The work shows the mature composer at the height of his artistic development and combines German symphonic tradition with French elegance and colorfulness.

The symphony is characterized by Franck's distinctive cyclic compositional technique, in which thematic material returns and is varied throughout all three movements. Particularly striking is the chromatically descending main theme of the first movement, which gives the entire work its darkly passionate fundamental character. The slow middle movement captivates through its singable melody and refined instrumentation, while the finale turns triumphantly from D minor to D major.

Although the work provoked mixed reactions at its premiere in 1889, it quickly established itself as a masterwork of French late Romanticism. The present critical new edition by Nieweg and Johnson offers a scholarly text foundation that reproduces Franck's original intentions as faithfully as possible and makes this significant work of orchestral literature accessible in authentic form.

„This symphony is proof that Franck was a great symphonist, even though he wrote only one.“
— Vincent d'Indy, César Franck (1906)
„The symphony was initially coolly received by Parisian critics but is now regarded as Franck's masterpiece.“
— Laurence Davies, César Franck and His Circle (1970)

The premiere took place as part of the concert series of the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire. The audience's reaction, and particularly that of fellow musicians in attendance, was largely cool to dismissive. Well known is the alleged remark by the composer Charles Gounod, who criticized the work as "incompetence raised to the level of doctrine" — though the exact wording varies depending on the source. Camille Saint-Saëns took particular issue with the unorthodox use of the cor anglais in the second movement and is said to have commented on the work disparagingly. Franck himself, however, was delighted with the performance. The symphony is César Franck's only completed symphony, composed between 1886 and 1888. Today it is regarded as one of the most significant works in the French symphonic repertoire of the 19th century. It is often said to have been dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Henri Duparc — in fact, it was published without a formal dedication, but it is closely associated with Franck's circle of students.
