Richard Strauss composed “Ein Heldenleben” (A Hero's Life), Op. 40, in 1898; the premiere took place on 3 March 1899 in Frankfurt am Main under his own direction. The work ranks among the composer's most significant and expansive tone poems, and stands in the tradition of the major programmatic orchestral works Strauss produced during the 1880s and 1890s.
The score is cast in a single movement divided into six sections that flow seamlessly into one another, and it traces the portrait of an idealized hero — one bearing unmistakable autobiographical traits. The hero is confronted by his adversaries, accompanied by his life companion, fights and triumphs, and ultimately withdraws into inner tranquility and a renunciation of the world. Throughout the work, Strauss draws extensively on quotations from his own earlier compositions, lending the piece a reflective, almost valedictory character.
In purely musical terms, “Ein Heldenleben” calls for a large late-Romantic orchestra with an expanded brass section and a prominently featured solo violin, which embodies the hero's companion. The score is widely regarded as a prime example of Strauss's mastery of orchestration: sonically powerful, contrapuntally dense, and marked by an extraordinary interweaving of motifs.
The composer conducted the premiere himself.
