Camille Saint-Saëns composed his “Carnival of the Animals” in 1886 — a work he refused to authorize for publication during his lifetime, and which only reached the public after his death. This "Grand Zoological Fantasy" thus stands somewhat apart from his official output, yet it exemplifies his compositional mastery and his gift for subtle humor.

In terms of sound, the work inhabits the world of French late Romanticism, a movement Saint-Saëns himself helped define as one of its central figures. The music is marked by sparkling elegance, refined wit, and an airy lightness of touch that treats the full orchestra with chamber-like transparency. Incisive rhythms, deft instrumentation, and clever allusions to works by other composers lend the piece an ironic depth that goes far beyond mere entertainment.

In its combination of esprit, technical precision, and playful freedom, the “Carnival of the Animals” is characteristic of the French orchestral tradition of the late nineteenth century — an era in which composers such as Saint-Saëns countered the weighty Germanic symphonic tradition with a musical language that was elegant, formally lucid, and sharp-witted in its expression.

„I wrote "The Carnival of the Animals" for myself and for my friends, not for the public. It would do harm to my reputation as a serious composer.“
— Saint-Saëns, zitiert in: Michael Stegemann, „Camille Saint-Saëns und das französische Solokonzert", Franz Steiner Verlag 1984; sinngemäß auch belegt in Stephen Studd, „Saint-Saëns: A Critical Biography", Cygnus Arts 1999.

Saint-Saëns composed "The Carnival of the Animals" in February 1886 in just a few weeks, as a musical joke intended for a private performance among close musician friends on the evening of Mardi Gras. He kept the work under wraps for the rest of his life, forbidding any public performance or publication of the score out of concern that such a lighthearted piece might damage his reputation as a serious composer. The only exception was the celebrated cello movement "Le Cygne" (The Swan), which he permitted to be printed and performed publicly during his lifetime. The full public premiere and publication of the complete work did not take place until 1922, shortly after Saint-Saëns died in December 1921.

The composer conducted the premiere himself.
