Camille Saint-Saëns completed his Third Symphony in C minor, Op. 78, in 1886 and dedicated it to the memory of Franz Liszt. The work is regarded as the pinnacle of his symphonic output and as one of the most significant examples of French orchestral music from the late nineteenth century – an era in which composers such as César Franck and Saint-Saëns himself sought to forge a distinctly French musical language in response to the German influence of Wagner and Brahms.

The symphony captivates through its extraordinary richness of sound. The organ does not appear as a solo instrument but instead blends with the orchestral forces to form a monumental, at times almost sacred, sonic whole. Saint-Saëns also makes use of piano four hands – an unusual choice that lends the overall sound a shimmering, orchestral fullness. The musical language moves between late-Romantic harmony, brilliant orchestration, and a characteristically French elegance and transparency.

Saint-Saëns himself is said to have considered this symphony his most important work. Whether this assessment is reliably documented or belongs to the realm of legend remains an open question – yet the lasting impression the work has made on concert life speaks for itself.

„I put everything I had into it. What I achieved here, I will never achieve again.“

Symphony No. 3 in C minor, Op. 78 was commissioned by the Philharmonic Society of London and would prove to be Saint-Saëns's final work in the genre. He dedicated it to Franz Liszt, who had died shortly before, and with whom he had shared a long and close friendship. The work is considered the most technically ambitious of the composer's orchestral compositions: it incorporates an organ and a piano four hands into the orchestra, and condenses the traditional four movements into two parts. Saint-Saëns himself regarded Symphony No. 3 as his most significant work, writing that he had poured everything he had to give into it.

The composer conducted the premiere himself.
