Camille Saint-Saëns composed his Morceau de Concert for horn and orchestra, Op. 94, in 1887 – during a period when he was long established as one of the leading figures in French instrumental music. The work emerged in the context of a deliberate effort to elevate the solo concerto as a genre in France, a cause Saint-Saëns championed with great dedication throughout his life.
The composition combines elegant cantability with virtuosic demands, reflecting Saint-Saëns's characteristic blend of craftsmanlike clarity and sonic refinement. The horn is called upon to display its full lyrical expressiveness and technical range, yet never lapses into mere display for its own sake. The orchestral writing remains transparent and lucid – entirely in the spirit of the French tradition, which prizes colour and elegance over dramatic weight.
The Morceau de Concert belongs to a series of solo pieces with which Saint-Saëns sought to fill gaps in the repertoire for various wind instruments. Similar works were written for bassoon, clarinet, and oboe. Whether the horn piece was intended for a specific soloist or occasion is not reliably documented – though it is said to have been closely connected to the Parisian concert life of its time.
