Prokofiev's Second Violin Concerto was composed in 1935 during his time in Western Europe, before his final return to the Soviet Union. The work reveals the composer at the height of his creative maturity and combines his characteristic melodic style with a refined orchestral language. Compared to the first violin concerto, it appears more lyrical and accessible, without abandoning Prokofiev's distinctive harmonic idiosyncrasies.

The music breathes that typically Russian tone that permeates Prokofiev's entire output – a blend of nostalgia and irony, of folk directness and sophisticated modernism. Melodic lines of great beauty alternate with rhythmically striking passages in which Prokofiev's motoric energy comes fully into play. The solo violin is not treated as virtuosic display for its own sake, but as an integral component of a balanced musical dialogue.

The concerto is considered one of the most significant violin concertos of the 20th century and stands as exemplary of Prokofiev's ability to combine modern compositional techniques with Romantic expressivity. It shows the composer as a mediator between the aesthetic worlds of his time.
