Prokofiev's Symphonic Suite from "The Love for Three Oranges" was created in 1919 as an orchestral arrangement of his opera of the same name and belongs to the most characteristic works of his early creative period. The suite embodies that ironic lightness and grotesque exaggeration that marked Prokofiev's style in the years following the October Revolution, when he moved between Russian tradition and Western modernism.
The music is distinguished by Prokofiev's typical combination of neoclassical clarity with harsh rhythmic accents and surprising harmonic turns. Fairy-tale playfulness alternates with biting satire, while the orchestral texture ranges from chamber music transparency to opulent sonority. Particularly characteristic are the grotesque distortions of melodic lines and the often mechanically-sounding rhythms.
The work reflects Prokofiev's engagement with the Italian commedia dell'arte and stands as an exemplar of his ability to permeate traditional forms with modernist musical language. The suite is said to be among the composer's most successful orchestral compositions and is regarded as a prime example of his unmistakable personal style between classicism and modernism.
