Lt. Kije – Symphonic suite

Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kijé Suite was created in 1934 as a concert arrangement of his film score for Alexander Fainzimmer's satirical film of the same name. The work demonstrates the composer at the height of his creative powers and characteristically combines his neoclassical style with the specifically Russian musical language of his generation. The five movements ironically depict the life and death of a fictional figure from the Tsarist military.

Prokofiev's music shifts between elegiac melancholy and grotesque humor, employing great orchestral sophistication to create a multi-layered soundscape. Particularly striking is the use of the cornet as a characteristic military instrument, as well as the skillful integration of saxophone and piano into the symphonic texture. The suite is considered exemplary of Prokofiev's ability to combine memorable melodies with harmonic complexity.

As one of the composer's most accessible orchestral works, the Kijé Suite unites both popular elements and the avant-garde tendencies of early Soviet modernism. It reflects Prokofiev's position between tradition and innovation and demonstrates his mastery of orchestration, which places him alongside Stravinsky and Ravel among the great masters of orchestral color in the 20th century.
