Alexander Glazunov's Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 82, composed in 1904, ranks among the most significant works in the late Romantic Russian musical tradition. It combines the lyrical depth of the Russian national school with the consummate craftsmanship that distinguishes Glazunov as a pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov. The musical language is warm and songlike, shaped by broad melodic arcs and a richly luminous orchestral sound.

The concerto follows in the tradition of the great Romantic violin concertos of Western Europe, yet breathes an unmistakably Russian spirit. The solo violin unfolds in lyrically expressive lines that unite technical brilliance with heartfelt cantabile. Glazunov achieves a well-judged balance between virtuosic demands and melodic substance — the work never sounds merely showy, but always musically considered.

The concerto is said to have been written at the request of the violinist Leopold Auer, to whom it is dedicated and who shaped its place in the repertoire for decades. It is regarded as one of the last great masterworks of Russian late Romanticism and continues to be cherished by leading violinists worldwide. Here, Glazunov strikes that golden tone between tradition and expressive richness that is the hallmark of his work as a whole.

The Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 82 was premiered by Leopold Auer, who would later become the teacher of the fifteen-year-old Jascha Heifetz, and to whom Glazunov had dedicated the work. Auer had initially declared the concerto unplayable, but eventually took it up and, through his performance, brought it to international acclaim. The work subsequently became a test piece at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and was carried to audiences around the world by Auer's students, among them Heifetz, Mischa Elman, and Efrem Zimbalist.
