Alexander Glazunov's Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major, Op. 55, composed in 1895, ranks among the most significant works of this late Russian Romantic composer. Subtitled the "Heroic Symphony," it places itself within a tradition of programmatically inflected orchestral music that flourished particularly in Russia during the late nineteenth century. Glazunov occupies a position between the nationalist impulses of Balakirev's "Mighty Handful" and the Western-oriented professionalism of Tchaikovsky — a synthesis that shapes his entire symphonic output.
In terms of sound, the work is marked by great opulence and consummate craftsmanship. The rich orchestral palette — featuring tripled woodwinds, a full brass section, and harp — unfolds a dense, colorful texture that combines heroic gesture with lyrical warmth. Glazunov's melodic writing is broad-breathed and singably beautiful, while the harmonic language remains clearly tonal, albeit with subtle chromatic shadings.
The Fifth is regarded as a high point of Glazunov's middle creative period, during which he brought his symphonic language to full maturity. For those wishing to explore the great symphonies of Russian late Romanticism, this work offers compelling energy and noble sonority in equal measure.
The composer conducted the premiere himself.
