Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony in B minor, Op. 74, composed in 1893, is widely regarded as the most personal and darkest expression of his symphonic output. The work stands at the culmination of a long tradition of Russian Romanticism, combining late-Romantic harmony with an unparalleled emotional immediacy. The subtitle "Pathétique" — said to have originated with the composer himself — points to the passionate, profoundly human character of the music.

The score calls for a large orchestra with triple woodwinds, four horns, timpani, and percussion including cymbals, bass drum, and an ad libitum tam-tam. Tchaikovsky deploys these forces with the utmost care, crafting music of extraordinary psychological depth that unfolds between elemental outbursts and moments of fragile tenderness.

The symphony is considered a key work of Russian late Romanticism and at the same time represents a pinnacle of European symphonic writing at the close of the nineteenth century. Tchaikovsky is said to have lost the work just days after its premiere — he died later that same October. Whether the symphony is to be understood as an artistic testament remains an open question, yet it lends the work an enduring aura of finality and inevitability.

„I have poured my whole heart into this symphony. Without exaggeration, I can say it is the finest thing I have ever written — and the crowning achievement of my entire life.“

„I am very proud of this symphony, and I believe it is unlike anything else I have written. But we shall talk about that later, once you have heard it.“

Tchaikovsky himself conducted the premiere of his Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74, on October 28, 1893 (October 16 by the Julian calendar) in St. Petersburg. A mere nine days later, on November 6, 1893, he died under circumstances that have never been fully explained -- officially from cholera. The audience's response at the premiere was lukewarm, and Tchaikovsky himself is said to have been uncertain about how the work had landed. It was only after his death that the symphony, now bearing the nickname "Pathétique" suggested by his brother Modest, became a worldwide success and came to be seen as the composer's musical testament. The unusual finale -- a slow Adagio lamentoso steeped in resignation, in place of a triumphant closing movement -- has frequently been interpreted, in hindsight, as a deliberate farewell to life.

The composer conducted the premiere himself.
