Alexander Glazunov ranks among the most significant Russian composers of the late Romantic era — a master of orchestral texture who knew how to unite symphonic rigour with melodic warmth. His March on a Russian Theme, Op. 76, composed in 1901, takes its place in that series of characteristic orchestral pieces through which Glazunov transplanted Russia's musical heritage into a Western European sound world with assured stylistic command.
The work captivates with its fresh, energetic character and noble bearing, placing it in the company of the great ceremonial marches of the age — comparable in effect to the pomp and ceremony that Elgar was cultivating in England at precisely the same time. The folk-inspired thematic material is worked out with masterful orchestral control, lending the piece an unmistakable blend of earthy charm and symphonic distinction.
Written for large orchestra, the march unfolds in the concert hall with an immediate, sweeping impact. It represents Glazunov's ability to write substantive music for entertainment purposes at the highest level of craftsmanship — a hallmark of quality that has secured his music a firm place in the repertoire to this day.
