Alexander Glazunov is one of the central figures of late Russian Romanticism. A pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov and an early protégé of the Belyayev Circle, he combined the national tradition of the Mighty Five with Western European formal rigour and orchestral brilliance. The Triumphal March, Op. 40, composed in 1892, is exemplary of Glazunov's assured command of the large orchestral apparatus: the musical language is festive and broad in conception, characterised by radiant brass fanfares, rich string sound, and an unmistakably grand, ceremonial manner.

The work was written during a creatively productive phase in the composer's career, during which he produced numerous orchestral pieces across a variety of genres. The Triumphal March bears less resemblance to a military march than to a festive act of homage — ceremonious, and with that elegant sweep that distinguishes Glazunov's orchestral output in general.

In the context of Russian music of the 1890s, the work takes its place within a tradition of representative occasional compositions that played a significant role in the social and cultural life of St. Petersburg. Glazunov's masterly orchestration lends even this shorter piece a sonic splendour that reaches well beyond the immediate occasion that prompted it.
