Alexander Glazunov ranks among the central figures of late Russian Romanticism. A pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov and an early protégé of Balakirev, he united the traditions of the Russian national school with a mastery of craft that placed him in the company of the great European symphonists of his day. His musical language combines orchestral brilliance with structural clarity.
The suite “From the Middle Ages”, Op. 79, composed around 1902, draws on a Romantic vision of a bygone era — not as historical reconstruction, but as atmospheric evocation. The work reveals Glazunov as a tone painter who, with an assured instinct for orchestration and harmonic warmth, conjures an idealized medieval world. It thus takes its place among those programmatically inspired orchestral works of the late Romantic period that aspire less to narrative than to mood.
Glazunov composed the work during his most productive years, the same period that saw the creation of his most significant symphonies. In keeping with its large orchestral forces, the piece unfolds a broad, rich sonority characteristic of the Russian orchestral tradition of that era — abundant in texture, immediate in its appeal.
