Cécile Chaminade (1857–1944) ranks among the most significant composers of the French late Romantic period. Her extensive output is marked by melodic inventiveness, elegant harmony, and that characteristic French esprit that bridges the worlds of the salon and the concert hall.
The Concertino for Flute and Orchestra, Op. 107, written around 1902, is one of the most frequently performed works in the entire flute repertoire. It combines lyrical cantability with brilliant virtuosity and bears the unmistakable hallmarks of the French school: clear melodic lines, transparent instrumentation, and a refined sensitivity to tone colour. The harp lends the orchestral sound a shimmering, impressionistic quality reminiscent of contemporaries such as Fauré or Massenet, without directly imitating their influence.
The solo flute moves within a tension between songful intimacy and playful lightness — qualities that Chaminade cultivated throughout much of her work. The piece is said to have been written for the entrance examination at the Paris Conservatoire, and as such reflects the distinguished tradition of the French wind-playing school. To this day, it remains an indispensable part of the concertante flute repertoire.
