Claude Debussy's "Clair de Lune" was originally composed as the third movement of the "Suite bergamasque" for piano and is considered one of the most famous pieces of French Impressionism. The work exemplifies Debussy's revolutionary musical language, which turned away from the German late-Romantic tradition and instead relied on floating harmonies, flowing melodic lines, and a subtle poetry of sound.
The orchestration is by André Caplet, a student and close friend of Debussy's, who sensitively arranged several of the master's piano works for orchestra. Caplet's 1899 arrangement skillfully transfers the impressionistic sound world of the original to a chamber orchestra setting, with the harp taking on a particularly atmospheric role.
The piece stands paradigmatically for French music around 1900, which deliberately distanced itself from German symphonic writing and instead developed a specifically French aesthetic of suggestion and intoxicating sound. "Clair de Lune" is said to owe its title to Paul Verlaine's poem of the same name and embodies that symbolist connection between music and poetry that characterizes Debussy's creative output.
