Alexis-Emmanuel Chabrier is one of the most distinctive figures in French music of the late nineteenth century. His Rhapsody “España” was composed in 1883, inspired by the composer's journey to the Iberian Peninsula, and has since been regarded as one of the most brilliant examples of musical colorism of the era. The work belongs to the context of French late Romanticism, in which exoticism and richness of color were cultivated and refined in equal measure as artistic means.

The musical language of the Rhapsody is characterized by irresistible vitality and rhythmic energy. Chabrier draws on Spanish dance rhythms — in particular the jota and the malagueña — within a masterfully handled orchestral setting that unites percussion, harp, and full brass ensemble into a sparkling sonic tableau. The orchestration is lush and spectacular, yet always precise in its craftsmanship: a hallmark that underscores Chabrier's stylistic independence from his contemporaries.

“España” is said to have received an enthusiastic reception at its premiere and went on to exert a lasting influence on composers such as Debussy and Ravel. Within Chabrier's output as a whole, the Rhapsody occupies a central place — as a key work in which his characteristic wit, his harmonic boldness, and his instinct for orchestral effect come together in exemplary fashion.

„I heard things in Spain that drove me wild: the rhythms, the harmonies, that incredible vibrancy — all of it demanded to be written down. "España" is what came out of that obsession.“

In 1882, Chabrier traveled extensively through Spain to study opera productions, sketching folk rhythms and melodies along the way. The result was the rhapsody España, which caused a sensation at its premiere under Charles Lamoureux, with Parisian audiences immediately demanding an encore. Johannes Brahms, who was in the audience that evening, is said to have exclaimed afterward that he wished he had written the piece himself. España established Chabrier's international reputation and is considered one of the earliest and most influential examples of musical Hispanism in the Western European orchestral repertoire.
