The Flower Duet "Sous le dôme épais" from Léo Delibes' opera “Lakmé” (1883) ranks among the best-known arias of the French operatic repertoire of the late nineteenth century. Delibes, who had already established a distinctive melodic style with his ballets “Coppélia” and “Sylvia”, here unfolds an entrancing sound world that subtly weaves together the influence of Orientalism — a defining aesthetic current in French art of those decades — with the elegance of lyric opera.
The duet's floating, sensuous quality owes much to its characteristic voice-leading: two female voices entwine around each other in gentle parallel thirds and sixths, borne along by a transparent, flowing orchestral texture. This lightness, combined with harmonic refinement, makes the piece a model example of the French “style galant” of the late Romantic era.
