Léo Delibes

Short biography Clément Philibert Léo Delibes was born on 21 February 1836 in Saint-Germain-du-Val, Sarthe, France. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, where his teachers included Adolphe Adam. He began his professional career as an accompanist and chorus master at the Paris Opéra, and later served as second chorus master at the Théâtre Lyrique. He was appointed professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire in 1881 and was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1884. He died in Paris on 16 January 1891.

Historical placement Delibes belongs to the French Romantic tradition of the latter nineteenth century. He is particularly associated with the elevation of ballet music as a serious compositional form, bringing to it a melodic elegance, rhythmic vitality, and careful orchestration that influenced later composers. His opera *Lakmé* stands as a notable example of French opéra comique and of the broader Orientalist current in late nineteenth-century Western music. Tchaikovsky publicly admired his ballet scores, considering them superior to many works of the period.

Personal connections Adolphe Adam was Delibes's teacher at the Paris Conservatoire, providing the foundational training in theatrical and operatic composition that shaped his career. Ludwig Minkus was his co-composer on the ballet *La Source* (1866), with each composer contributing separate acts. Léo Delibes taught composition at the Paris Conservatoire, where Jules Massenet was among the faculty colleagues during his tenure (direct teacher–student relationship with Massenet not confirmed).
