Alexis-Emmanuel Chabrier ranks among the most distinctive voices in French music of the late nineteenth century. With a keen sense of humour, rhythmic energy, and harmonic boldness, he created a body of work that balances between salon culture and artistic avant-garde, and that is said to have left a lasting influence on both Ravel and Poulenc.
The Bourrée fantasque was composed in 1891, originally as a piano piece, and takes the traditional bourrée – a lively folk dance from the Auvergne – as its starting point, only to transform it with exuberant temperament and piquant wit. Chabrier's musical language is marked by sparkling rhythmic drive, surprising harmonic turns, and an almost grotesque abandon that lifts the piece far beyond mere folk allusion.
The work is regarded as one of the most characteristic examples of the French esprit in the instrumental music of the Belle Époque – witty, impudent, and at the same time distinguished by a craftsman's refinement that marks Chabrier as a genuine innovator. In its orchestral guise, this energy unfolds with even greater sonic richness and colour, with the harp, percussion, and full complement of winds lending the piece its characteristic festive brilliance.
The premiere was conducted by the composer Felix Mottl.
