Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky's “Swan Lake”, Op. 20, ranks among the most significant ballet works in the history of music. Its world premiere took place in 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, yet it was only after a revised new production by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov in 1895 in St. Petersburg that the work began its worldwide triumph. The music unites symphonic depth with choreographic elegance, thereby setting a new standard for the ballet as a genre.
