Richard Strauss's tone poem "Don Juan" marks the artistic breakthrough of the 25-year-old composer and established him as a leading figure of German late Romanticism. The work already displays that characteristic combination of virtuosic orchestral technique and dramatic expressiveness that would define Strauss's entire output. With its brilliant orchestration and bold harmonic turns, it transcends the boundaries of traditional program music.
The score reveals Strauss's mastery in handling the late Romantic large orchestra. Passionate string melodies alternate with virtuosic wind passages, while the expanded percussion section contributes additional tone colors. The music shifts between rapturous lyricism and dramatic intensification, with Strauss already developing those orchestral effects that would later distinguish his operas.
"Don Juan" is considered a turning point in the history of the tone poem and is said to have caused a great sensation at its premiere in Weimar. The work stands as exemplary of German musical culture around 1890, which sought a path between Wagnerian tradition and a new, more modern musical language.
The composer conducted the premiere himself.
