Camille Saint-Saëns wrote his "Grand Zoological Fantasy" in 1886 – a work that occupies a singular niche within French late Romanticism. With subtle wit and masterly irony, the composer creates a sweeping sonic panorama of animals, one that bears equal witness to brilliant craftsmanship and to a humorous detachment from the musical conventions of his time. Saint-Saëns is said to have kept the work from the public throughout his lifetime, fearing it might damage his reputation as a serious composer.
The chamber scoring – two solo pianos, strings, woodwind and percussion instruments, and harmonium – gives the work a transparent, at times almost caricature-like sound. Saint-Saëns reveals himself here as a master of musical characterisation: tone colours and rhythms are deployed with precision to render the temperament and movement of each animal portrait audible, always with a knowing wink.
Within the context of French music in the second half of the nineteenth century, the work embodies that elegant esprit which distinguishes Saint-Saëns's output as a whole: formal clarity shaped by classicist ideals, combined with an unerring instinct for sonic effect and instrumental refinement.
